poem
Volume 37, Number 3

Minneapolis 2026

that was the year
for us of getting away with
mercy

one set of lungs would
deflate into a whistle
and then another
till we defeated
silence

green government men
gifted us green air
to choke on
till we were green
as them

growing up
our bad guys were
Soviets or Decepticons
not from here
not like us

in that raw year
we watched faceless Americans fire
half a score of bullets
till Alex was no more
to them
than a burden
of protein
on the icy sidewalk
and a trinity of bullets
into Renee till she was Good
and dead

we cried
you and I
involuntary tears

they had guns
we had cameras
it wasn’t a fair fight
for them
